About Dental Implants
Implants aren’t a “quick fix” dental treatment. The implant process takes time and involves dental surgery. The final results, however, make these restorations an excellent choice for seniors.
Dr. Munira Lokhandwala and the team will start by evaluating your mouth, oral health, and overall health to determine if you’re a good candidate for implants. Good candidates are those with good health, healthy gums, and sufficient bone support to anchor the implants. If you have extensive bone loss, we may need to rebuild your jawbone through grafting before proceeding with your treatment.
Single implants are generally used to replace individual missing teeth using a dental crown as your replacement tooth. To replace several teeth in a row, we’ll create an implant bridge. If you’ve lost all your teeth, Dr. Lokhandwala and the team can rebuild your smile with life-like implant-supported dentures so you can avail yourself of this life-changing dental treatment.
The Implant Process
Dental implants have three parts – an implant screw, an abutment, and a restoration (crown, bridge, or denture). The implant itself is embedded into your jaw surgically. The number of implants used depends on the number of teeth you’re replacing. Individual missing teeth take one implant each. For a row of several missing teeth, we’ll use an implant on either end of your bridge. Implant-supported dentures can be anchored with four to six implants placed strategically in your mouth. We’ll discuss these options with you before proceeding with your treatment.
After the implant is placed in your jaw, we’ll wait for it to fuse with your bone system. This process can take up to six months to complete. Once the implant has integrated into your jaw, we’ll attach an abutment to support your new tooth/teeth. Finally, we’ll attach your restoration to complete the procedure.
