Dentures

A step by step guide to complete dentures in San Jose, CA

If you are in San Jose and think you might need complete dentures but don’t know where to start, follow this step by step guide.

The Consultation

In the initial consultation, Dr. Lokhandwala will explain the various options available to you and will help you select your teeth. Your goal is to find teeth that will look natural in your mouth. Size, shape, and color are important factors to consider.

There will also be an examination to determine if the tissue in your mouth is healthy enough to take impressions. If it isn’t, conditioning or saline rinses can help.

Impressions

Impressions are required to make models of your tissue and gum ridges. Impressions can be taken one at a time or simultaneously. Patients report little discomfort during this process.

The Bite

Dr. Lokhandwala will measure your vertical dimension, the distance between your upper and lower jaw, and your bite, the relationship between your upper and lower jaw. This measurement will be transferred to your dentures.

Anterior Try In

The upper six teeth are the ones most prominently seen and therefore are the first ones to be set in wax. You will be able to try on the teeth for appearance. It is important that your new teeth are set in a position that will best complement your face. Dr. Lokhandwala will set the teeth in the center and check for appropriate tooth lengths and the right angle to support your lips. Any necessary adjustments can be made at this time.

Complete Wax Try In

Once all of the teeth are set in the wax, you will be able to try them on. This will allow you to make sure the teeth are correct before they are set in hard acrylic. You will want to consider the overall appearance of your new teeth as well as the bite. Dr. Lokhandwala recommends bringing a spouse, family member, or friend to provide a second opinion.

Insertion

Congratulations! You will now receive your completed dentures. Your new dentures will be checked for any pressure areas and a proper bite. You will also receive instructions on cleaning your dentures, a denture cup, and a brush. Occasionally, your new dentures may need some adjustments and that should be handled as soon as the issue is noticed.

Dr. Lokhandwala and the team at Star Brite Dental put great care into making sure your dentures are the perfect fit for your mouth. We also offer a variety of additional dental services such as dental implants, porcelain veneers, crowns, and bridges. Call today to set up your appointment.
