Dental implants are titanium roots that are replaced within the jaw bones to resemble a tooth or a group of teeth. A screw is inserted into the gums and into the jaw bone. A porcelain crown is then attached to the screw to become the new tooth or teeth. They can be used to support dental prestices including crowns dentures and bridges. Today’s treatments are so natural looking no one will know you had surgery. There is approximately a 95 percent success rate for all implants with modern advancements in dentistry some implants can be restored immediately with life like all porcelain crowns. For more details ask your dentist.

Understanding the value of dental implants

While dental implants may be more expensive than alternative tooth restoration options such as dentures and dental bridges, they are worth the investment for many of our patients at StarBrite Dental. Dental implants act as artificial tooth roots. They provide a permanent foundation for a fixed restoration. They are popular for patients who are missing teeth because they fit, feel, and function as natural teeth do. Dental implants have quickly become the standard in tooth replacement, where they are successfully utilized.

Dental implants are made of medical-grade titanium, a metal that is biocompatible with the body. The fixture fuses to the bone of the jaw through a union called osseointegration. This builds a permanent anchor for new, man-made teeth. With dental implants, patients do not experience problems with poor fit and slippage as they would with dentures.

Each dental implant has three parts:

  • Implant. The implant itself looks like a small screw. It is permanently attached to the jaw after implant and osseointegration.
  • Abutment. The abutment is a connector that is placed onto the implant and used to hold the restoration in place.
  • Crown. To replace a single tooth, a dental crown is anchored onto the abutment. However, some patients may have bridges or dentures made to fit over their dental implants, depending on their unique needs. This versatility is what makes dental implants a popular choice.

SUCCESS STORIES

After my first visit, I was far less nervous about going to the dentist than I ever have been before. Dr. Lokhandwala is the gentlest dentist I have ever been to. Not to mention that the entodontist she referred me to (for the root canal) used nitrous oxide (laughing gas) at my request (the first time THAT has ever been available to me) and my root canal was no problem at all. For my implant, Dr. Lokhandwala used a relaxant and I don’t know what all. I fell asleep in the waiting room and woke up to be told that she was nearly finished.
Dr. Lokhandwala listens carefully to everything I say and has an excellent “bedside manner”.
Finally I won’t have to be in trepidation about my dental visits.
Thank you.

Who is a candidate?

Dental implants are not for everyone. However, Dr. Munira Lokhandwala will evaluate a patient to determine if it is an option. Dental implants require patients to have a bone in place to ensure the process of osteointegration can occur. Without osseointegration, the implant is not anchored to the jawbone and may fail. Patients who have experienced tooth loss for a while may have dental resorption that keeps them from getting an implant. With bone grafting, patients can prepare their jaw for placement. However, this procedure needs to be completed by another dental professional as it is not available at StarBrite Dental.

What can I expect from beginning to end with a dental implant?

Before patients can have the procedure, they need a full evaluation with Dr. Munira Lokhandwala to determine if they are a proper candidate. This evaluation may include x-rays to check tooth and bone health. If patients are appropriate for dental implants, they will schedule their placement appointment. Patients are adequately sedated and anesthetized for this visit, during which Dr. Munira Lokhandwala will affix the implant to the jawbone. The area is sutured and requires time to heal, typically several weeks. This also allows for time for osseointegration to occur. After the dental implant is firmly in place within the bone, the crown, bridge, or denture can be placed on the abutment. Their dentist educates patients on how to care for their new dental restoration to avoid damage, disease, and decay that can impact the rest of the smile.
